Frequently Asked Questions
To ensure optimal system performance, it is recommended to replace the filters every 6–12 months, clean the system regularly, and inspect the membrane periodically, especially if the feed water quality is poor.
The RO system removes about 99% of impurities, making it ideal for providing safe and healthy water in homes, factories, and even hospitals. It also improves taste by removing unwanted odors such as chlorine or sulfur. To maintain its efficiency, it is advisable to change filters and clean the system regularly, as its components can last 2–5 years depending on water quality and usage. This system is the perfect solution for areas suffering from hard or contaminated water.
The water treatment process goes through several integrated steps to ensure the removal of impurities and to improve its quality so that it becomes suitable for drinking and use. The main steps include:
Coagulation and Flocculation: Chemicals are added to the water to gather small particles such as soil and impurities into larger clumps that are easier to remove.
Sedimentation: The water is transferred to large tanks where the heavy clumps settle at the bottom by gravity, allowing the clean water to separate from the sediments.
Filtration: The water is passed through filters made of sand or activated carbon to remove any remaining fine particles.
Reverse Osmosis (RO) System: At this stage, a semi-permeable membrane is used to remove dissolved salts and heavy metals such as lead and mercury, as well as microorganisms like bacteria and viruses. RO systems are considered one of the most efficient technologies for purifying water and producing clean and healthy water.
Disinfection: To sterilize the water and ensure it is free from harmful organisms, substances such as chlorine or techniques like ultraviolet (UV) light or ozone are used.
After these steps are completed, the treated water is stored and pumped into the networks to reach consumers. It is recommended to regularly maintain RO systems and filters to ensure process efficiency and the quality of the produced water.
There are several factors that affect the cost of building a water treatment plant, including the plant’s production capacity, the degree of water purity, and the salt content. The components used in constructing the plant are also an important factor; the more efficient and higher quality they are, the higher the cost.
Therefore, it is very important to carry out a chemical analysis of the water to be treated or desalinated to determine the appropriate plant design. For example, if a groundwater desalination plant has low salinity, its cost could range from 100,000 to 500,000. If it has medium salinity, the cost could range between 100,000 and 1,000,000. But if the water has high salinity, the cost could potentially range from 1 million to 5 million.
As mentioned, it is not only the salinity level that determines the cost; the plant’s capacity, the technologies used, and the operating and maintenance costs are all influencing factors.
Drinking Water Treatment Plants
Purpose: Purifying water to make it suitable for drinking.
Main stages:
Turbidity removal: through sedimentation and filtration.
Disinfection: using chlorine or ultraviolet light.
Contaminant removal: such as iron, manganese, and nitrates.
Wastewater Treatment Plants
Purpose: Purifying water resulting from domestic or industrial uses to make it safe for the environment or for reuse.
Types:
Primary treatment: to remove large solid materials.
Secondary treatment: to eliminate organic matter using microorganisms.
Tertiary treatment: to remove fine pollutants and heavy metals.
Industrial Water Treatment Plants
Purpose: Treating water used in industrial processes to meet specific requirements or for recycling.
Examples of treatment:
Oil and grease removal.
Elimination of heavy metals and toxic chemicals.
Reducing organic matter concentration.
Desalination Plants
Purpose: Removing salts and minerals from seawater or brackish water to make it suitable for drinking or industrial use.
Technologies used:
Reverse Osmosis (RO).
Thermal distillation.
Electrolysis.
Well Water Treatment Plants
Purpose: Purifying well water from contaminants such as iron, manganese, sulfates, and dissolved gases.
Main stages:
Sand or carbon filtration.
Disinfection.
Salt removal if concentrations are high.
Importance of choosing the right type of plant:
The choice depends on:
The source of water (surface water, groundwater, or seawater).
The purpose of treatment (drinking, industrial, or agricultural).
The degree of contamination and treatment needs.
In short, each type of water treatment plant plays a vital role in providing water of suitable quality to meet human and environmental needs.
The reverse osmosis (RO) system is an advanced water purification technology that removes salts, heavy metals, and dissolved contaminants such as bacteria and impurities. The process begins with a pre-filtration stage where large sediments and chlorine are removed to protect the fine membrane used in the system. After that, water is forced at high pressure through a semi-permeable membrane that allows only water molecules to pass through while blocking harmful impurities. Finally, the water passes through an additional filter to improve taste and odor before being stored in a special tank for use.
The RO system removes about 99% of impurities, making it ideal for providing safe and healthy water in homes, factories, and even hospitals. It also improves taste by eliminating unwanted odors such as chlorine or sulfur. To ensure its efficiency, it is recommended to change the filters and clean the system regularly, as its components can last from 2 to 5 years depending on water quality and usage. This system is the perfect solution for areas that suffer from hard or contaminated water.
